South African Grammy Nominee Hugh Masekela began singing and playing the piano and the trumpet at 14. He has an extensive jazz background and credentials, but has enjoyed major success as one of the earliest leaders in the world fusion mode.
During the early ’60s, his career exploded. He recorded for MGM, Mercury, and Verve, developing his hybrid African/pop/jazz style.
Hugh Masekela has been honoured with the highest order in South Africa: The Order of Ikhamanga.
He is a world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, and singer. His solo career has spanned 5 decades, during which time he has released over 40 albums (and been featured on countless more) and has worked with such diverse artists as Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie, The Byrds, Fela Kuti, Marvin Gaye, Herb Alpert, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and the late Miriam Makeba.
